A sudden change in the green channel''s parameters by Pakistan Customs has halted the clearance of thousands of containers of
Solar panels on homes and businesses in Karachi, Pakistan. The country is witnessing a people-led solar energy transformation. Photo by Hexzain / Shutterstock. Solar adoption in Pakistan resulted from a “perfect storm” of supply and demand.
The battery storage systems are still too expensive to be adopted as widely as solar has been in Pakistan in the near future. But distributors say prices are falling rapidly and demand continues to grow.
Though nascent, battery adoption is rising and will soon become another source of income to help stabilize Pakistan's overall electricity grid. One of the most profound yet under-acknowledged dimensions of Pakistan's solar boom is how it's facilitated energy access after 60 years of trying to do this with subsidized fossil fuels.
Households that can afford solar panels are switching off. Since 2015, Pakistan has drawn in billions of dollars' worth of sovereign-backed loans to finance new power plants and signed long-term liquefied natural gas deals with QatarEnergy and Italy's Eni.
