Reducing fuel consumption in shipping with wind-solar retrofits
Both vessels will be equipped with a wind-solar hybrid power system to reduce auxiliary engine emissions of a container cargo ship and a bulk carrier vessel. The technology
The renewables unit of Portuguese energy supplier EDP has commissioned Portugal's second solar-wind hybrid project. It has installed 36 thousand bifacial panels alongside 13 wind turbines to produce 79 GWh of renewable energy per year.
Beyond the interest of the results for the three wind farms considered, the approach followed in this work could be replicated for retrofitting other offshore wind farms with floating solar PV arrays or, more generally, for evaluating hybrid offshore wind–solar farms.
Reduced power output variability through hybrid offshore wind–solar farms. Three offshore wind farms in Europe and China selected for retrofitting with solar PV. Optimum capacity of solar energy subsystem for minimum power variability. Differences between the three farms in Europe and China due to resources.
Among these options, hybrid wind–solar farms stand out as a promising option, given the success of many large-scale land-based commercial solar energy projects. Wind and solar resources and their complementarity in specific areas have been widely investigated (e.g., Solbakken et al., Soukissian et al. and Delbeke et al. ).
