Ngerulmud (Palauan pronunciation: [ŋəˈɾulmuð]) is the seat of government of the Republic of Palau, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. It replaced Koror City as a capital in October 2006.
A Purpose-Built Capital: Unlike many capital cities that evolved organically, Ngerulmud was intentionally designed and constructed in the early 21st century to consolidate government functions and represent Palau's modern vision.
Visiting Ngerulmud: Transportation: Reaching Ngerulmud typically involves traveling from Koror, where the main airport is located. Rental cars and guided tours are the most common ways to explore Babeldaob and visit the capital.
Ngerulmud is derived from a Palauan phrase meaning "place of fermented angelfish ", referring to the hill overlooking the ocean that dominates the site. The last syllable, mud, is the Palauan word for Centropyge tibicen, also known as the keyhole angelfish.
