Construction of New Zealand's first large-scale grid battery storage system is now complete, with Meridian Energy's Ruakākā Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) being officially opened in a ceremony later today.
Meridian Energy is building New Zealand's first large-scale grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) at Ruakākā on North Island Paris, January 10, 2023 – Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has been awarded a major contract by Meridian Energy to construct New Zealand's first large-scale grid-connected BESS.
Construction of the BESS, located south of Whangārei, the northernmost city of New Zealand, began in early 2023 and was completed within the project's original budget of NZ$186 million (US$109 million). It forms stage two of Meridian's Ruakākā Energy Park development.
